Jim Adler has been an underwriter of the Students Partnering for Undergraduate Success (SPURS) Program at Jack Yates High School in Houston’s Third Ward. Yates has historically served underprivileged, low income students in one of Houston’s poorest neighborhoods. SPURS is a collaborative University of Texas program that teams UT college professors with students via the computer to improve their writing skills, enabling them to avoid remedial classes in college. Under the program, students submit essays on assigned subjects that are then graded and critiqued by UT professors and returned electronically. The professors also visit the school twice a semester to meet with students and counsel them personally. The SPURS program includes field trips to Austin to visit the University of Texas and meet peers from other high schools around the state.
