| The Joint City/County Commission on Children |
|
In recognition of Jim Adler’s charitable efforts on behalf of children and his concern for their welfare, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Joint City/ County Commission on Children by former Houston Mayor Bill White. Adler served on the Commission until it was dissolved in April 2011 by Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, ending its 18 years of advocacy for local children. The Commission was created by the City of Houston and Harris County in 1993 to review and recommend beneficial policies for kids up to age 18 in the Greater Houston area. During its 18 years of existence, the Commission fostered collaboration and resource sharing between governments and private entities to enhance outreach and avoid duplication of children’s services. The commission educated and informed national, regional and local policy makers, creators of children’s programs, business leaders and the public about children’s needs in the areas of health, education, security, safety and employment. It also secured grants for after- school programs and other children’s services to increase the quality of life for all youngsters in the Greater Houston area.
