Hormone Therapy

If you have suffered from serious side effects of hormone replacement therapy and need an HRT lawyer in Texas, contact Jim S. Adler & Associates.

For many years, women have taken Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for the purpose of reducing the symptoms of menopause. While women were led to believe taking HRT drugs (such as Prempro, Premarin, Premphase or Provera) was safe and even decreased certain health risks, studies now show that HRT can cause breast cancer and many other illnesses. Chances are if you took HRT medications, you assumed that drug companies like Wyeth had tested the safety of the medications. You are not alone -- thousands of women were led to believe that these drugs were not only safe, but that they provided health benefits.

HRT can cause harm

On July 9, 2002 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed that it was abruptly halting the use of Wyeth's Prempro in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study after three years into the study because of unacceptable risks associated with taking Prempro. Letters were sent to study participants urging them to stop taking the drugs because they led to increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Prempro - along with Femhrt, Ortho-Prefest, Premphase and other combined estrogen and progestin HRT - carry severe side effects that can be deadly for women. This study found the following increase of incidence with use of Prempro over non-combination HRT drugs:

  • 26 percent increase in breast cancer
  • 41 percent increase in strokes
  • 29 percent increase in heart attacks
  • 100 percent increase of blood clots in legs and lungs

In 2002, 6 million women were taking Prempro. In multiplying out the numbers against the 6 million, we see the catastrophic and broad-reaching health effects to women. For the 6 million women taking Prempro, there will be:

  • 480,000 additional breast cancer cases
  • 420,000 more heart attacks
  • 480,000 more strokes
  • 480,000 more blood clot cases
